Many cities celebrate the warm weather summer months with an abundance of festivals, and New Orleans is no exception. Not only do we provide summer festivities, we do it in a way that no other city in the country can offer. A prime example of a uniquely NOLA summer event is the Satchmo Summer Fest! And if you aren’t aware of just exactly who or what “Satchmo” is, then you’re in a dire need of a visit to New Orleans.
One of the most legendary talents to come out of the Big Easy, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong transformed the way the world saw jazz. “There are two kinds of music,” he once told. “The good and the bad kind. I play the good kind.” It would be hard to come by a single soul who didn’t agree.
Satchmo Summer Fest pays tribute to one of New Orleans’ most famous native sons, this year taking place the weekend of July 31st through August 3rd. The majority of the festival takes place on the grounds of the Old U.S. Mint. The festival is free and open to the public, featuring a strong lineup of live bands on several stages, each paying homage to “Satchmo” himself. Since it’s New Orleans, you can also expect a strong offering of Southern-style cuisine and beverages.
Music highlights include John Boutte, Preservation Hall Brass Band, Charmaine Neville, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, James Andrews, Brass-A-Holics, Treme Brass Band, Jeremy Davenport, and Kermit Ruffins. Click here for the full Satchmo Summer Fest 2014 musical lineup and seminars.
